How to choose a flashlight
- Brightness. 200–500 lm is enough around the house, 1000–2000 lm suits hiking and work, above 3000 lm is for search and technical tasks.
- Beam distance. A wide beam lights your feet and the work area; a narrow one throws light hundreds of metres.
- Power. A built-in battery is cheaper long term, while AA/AAA cells can always be swapped on the spot.
- Protection rating. IPX7 and IP68 survive rain and brief immersion.
- Body. Aluminium handles drops and dissipates heat better than plastic.
Torch or headlamp
A headlamp frees your hands — the best choice for running, hiking and repairs. A handheld torch throws a stronger, longer beam and suits the car, home and security use.

FAQ
Are more lumens always better? No. High output drains the battery fast; 500–1000 lumens covers most situations.
Is a battery included? Nitecore models usually include one; simple battery-powered torches need cells bought separately.
