How to choose a garment steamer

• Type. Handheld models are light and fit in a suitcase; upright steamers work through a whole wardrobe faster.
• Power. 1200–2000 W means quicker heat-up and a stronger jet of steam.
• Water tank. 0.2 litres covers a couple of shirts; 1.5–2 litres allows about an hour of continuous work.
• Heat-up time. Good models are ready in 30–45 seconds.
• Attachments. A brush head helps with thick fabric and wool, a protective head suits delicates.
