Cable category
- Cat5e — up to 1 Gbps. Enough for home internet and a typical router.
- Cat6 — 1 Gbps over longer runs and up to 10 Gbps over short ones. A good default.
- Cat8 — up to 40 Gbps over short runs, shielded (S/FTP). For NAS and fast local networks.
UTP or S/FTP
UTP is unshielded, thin and flexible — plenty for home use. S/FTP is shielded and protects against interference when the cable runs next to power lines.
FAQ
Is a cable faster than Wi-Fi? Usually yes: a cable is more stable and has lower latency, which matters for gaming and video calls.
