Good coffee starts with freshly ground beans. Coffee machines — bean-to-cup, espresso and capsule — make a cup at the push of a button; a coffee grinder adds flavour to any machine without a built-in mill. For cappuccino and latte there are milk frothers, for tea and quick hot water kettles, and a sparkling water maker turns tap water into soda without carrying bottles.

How to choose

A bean-to-cup machine suits several cups a day at the push of a button; an espresso machine gives more control and better crema; a capsule machine is the cheapest and cleanest. For grinders check the number of grind settings (espresso needs fine), for kettles the capacity and temperature selection — green tea doesn't like boiling water.

Is a separate milk frother worth it? If your capsule or espresso machine has no steam wand, a standalone frother is the easiest way to get café-style foam at home.

Blade or burr grinder? A burr grinder grinds evenly and suits espresso; a blade grinder is cheaper and fine for filter coffee.
