How to choose an air fryer

An air fryer cooks chips, chicken wings and vegetables crispy without oil — faster than an oven and healthier than a frying pan. There are dozens of models; here is what to choose by.

• Capacity. 2–3.5 l suits one or two people, 4.5–6 l is the family staple (a whole chicken or 1 kg of chips), 8–11 l dual-basket models cook the main and the side at the same time.
• Power. 1400–1700 W is enough for a small basket; 2000–2800 W preheats a large volume quickly and holds the temperature when the basket is full.
• One basket or two. Dual models (Ninja Double Stack and Dual Zone, Philips Dual Basket, Tefal Dual XXL, Tristar Dualzone) cook two dishes at different temperatures and finish together. The sync function is gold for a family.
• Window and light. A viewing window (e.g. Cecotec Cecofry Window) lets you watch the cooking without pulling out the basket — no heat escapes.
• Programmes and controls. A touch panel with 8–12 presets (chips, chicken, fish, bakes, dehydrate), keep-warm and preheat. Analogue dials are simple and cheap.
• Cleaning and noise. A non-stick, dishwasher-safe basket saves time every day; the Tefal Easy Fry Silence runs below 45 dB.

Tefal Easy Fry is a wide and quiet line, Ninja leads in dual-basket models, Cecotec and Tristar offer large capacity for less, Caso design, Xiaomi and Dreame smart app control, while Gorenje, ETA and Adler bring compact models for a small kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

Is an air fryer healthier than a pan? Yes — hot air gives a crisp surface with one teaspoon of oil or none at all, which is 70–80% less fat than a deep fryer.

What size for a family? For four, 5–6 litres; if you want the side and the main at once, choose a dual-basket 8–11 l.

Does an air fryer replace the oven? Day to day, largely yes: chicken, fish, vegetables, frozen food and even muffins. A large cake and the holiday roast still need an oven.

Can it go under a wall cabinet? An air fryer blows hot air out the back and top — leave 10–15 cm and do not place it directly under a cabinet.

Is the basket dishwasher-safe? On most Philips, Tefal, Ninja and Cecotec models, yes; the product page states it separately.
