Humidifier or dehumidifier?
In winter a heated flat often drops below 30% humidity — dry airways, dry eyes and shrinking wooden furniture. In summer and in basements the problem is the opposite: excess moisture brings mould. Measure the humidity and choose accordingly; 40–60% is the comfortable range.
What to look at
- Tank size. 3–5 l lasts a whole night without refilling.
- Technology. Ultrasonic is quiet and efficient, evaporative leaves no white dust, steam models sterilise the water with heat.
- Noise. Below 35 dB is bedroom-friendly.
- Maintenance. Check whether the model needs a replacement filter or just regular cleaning.
- Dehumidifier capacity. Measured in litres per day — 10–20 l/24 h covers a flat; basements need more.

FAQ
Can I use tap water? Ultrasonic models do better with soft or distilled water, otherwise a white mineral dust settles on furniture.
How often should the water be changed? Every day — standing water in the tank breeds bacteria.
