Ice maker, ice ball maker or ice cream maker
- An ice maker produces cubes in 6–12 minutes and needs no plumbing — you fill the tank by hand. Great for parties, bars and summer houses.
- An ice ball maker forms large spheres that melt slowly and never dilute whisky or a cocktail.
- An ice cream maker churns and freezes the mixture in a bowl; a compressor model needs no pre-freezing, a cheaper one requires the bowl to sit in the freezer.
What to look at
Tank capacity (1–2.5 l) decides how long the machine runs between refills, output (kg per 24 h) how much ice you get per day. Cube size is usually selectable: small chills faster, large melts slower. A compressor ice cream maker costs more but makes several batches back to back.

Frequently asked questions
Does an ice maker keep the ice frozen? Most countertop models do not — finished cubes drop into a basket and slowly melt, with the melt water returning to the tank. For longer storage move the ice to a freezer.
Must the ice cream bowl be pre-frozen? Not with a compressor model. Without a compressor the bowl needs 8–12 hours in the freezer.
