How to choose a dehumidifier

• Capacity. Measured in litres per day: 10–12 l covers a flat; for a basement or drying laundry choose 20 l and up.
• Tank or hose. A tank needs emptying by hand; a model with continuous drainage runs unattended.
• Humidistat. Holds the target humidity and switches off, so the room is not over-dried and power is not wasted.
• Noise. Below 40 dB is bedroom-friendly.
• Operating temperature. Compressor models struggle in a cold basement (below 15 °C) — a desiccant unit suits better.

When you need one

Steamed-up windows, mould in the corners and laundry that takes days to dry all mean humidity above 65%. A dehumidifier brings it to 45–55% and protects the building and furniture. The opposite problem — air that is too dry — is solved by a humidifier.

FAQ

How much power does it use? A household model draws 200–400 W; with a humidistat it cycles, so real consumption is lower.

Does it replace ventilation? No. It removes excess moisture, but fresh air still has to come in.
