How to choose a watch strap

A new strap changes the look of a watch more than any other accessory, and costs a fraction of a new watch. Two things have to match: the attachment and the width.

• Attachment. Apple Watch and several sports watches use their own fitting, Garmin uses QuickFit, most other watches use ordinary spring bars. A universal quick-release strap fits any watch of the right lug width.
• Width. Universal straps come in 18, 20, 22 and 26 mm. Measure the old strap between the lugs — that number has to match.
• Apple Watch sizing. Straps fall into two groups: for 38/40/41 mm cases and for 42/44/45/46/49 mm cases. Ultra belongs to the larger one.

Materials and when they make sense

• Silicone. For training and water: it shrugs off sweat, washes clean and does not stretch.
• Nylon. Light and breathable, good for summer and long wear; a woven band does not stick to the wrist.
• Leather. The classic choice for the office and dressing up; it does not like constant water or sweat.
• Stainless steel (Milanese mesh). Sits flat on the wrist, with a magnetic clasp for length.
• Titanium. The look of steel but noticeably lighter — at home on a large case.
• Resin. Light and colourful, sitting between silicone and plastic.
