How to choose a dash cam
The idea is simple: if something happens, you have the footage. Through the dark Estonian half of the year what matters most is how well the camera sees at dusk and against oncoming headlights.
- One camera or two. A single-channel recorder covers the road ahead. A dual kit adds a rear camera, which pays off in rear-end collisions and car park damage.
- Sensor and night performance. Sony STARVIS and other light-sensitive sensors keep number plates readable after dark; the makers' "Night Vision" and "HDR" labels point at the same goal.
- Field of view. 140–170° covers three lanes. Going wider stretches the edges of the frame and makes plates harder to read.
- Power: battery or supercapacitor. A capacitor copes better with heat and frost and suits a car parked in the sun; a battery runs longer without external power.
- Screen. Two to three inches is enough for setup. A mirror model spans the whole rear-view mirror and replaces it.
- GPS and Wi-Fi. GPS logs speed and coordinates, Wi-Fi lets you pull a clip to your phone without removing the memory card.
Loop recording and parking mode
Loop recording overwrites the oldest files automatically, so the card never fills up. The G-sensor detects an impact and locks the current file so it cannot be overwritten. Parking mode watches the car with the engine off — it usually needs constant power or a separate cable.

Do I need two cameras? If you park on the street and drive mostly in town, a rear camera earns its keep — a large share of damage comes from behind.
What card size should I get? Most models in this category take a 128–256 GB microSD; the exact limit is in each product's specifications.
Does a mirror cam fit any car? It straps over the existing mirror with rubber bands and fits most cars if there is room around the mirror.
Is audio recorded? Most models have a microphone and audio recording can be switched off in the menu.
