How to choose a tablet case

A tablet falls less often than a phone, but from higher up and usually on a corner. Four things matter: the model, the cover type, the stand and where the stylus goes.

• The exact model. Camera cut-outs and button positions change every generation — an iPad Air 11" and an iPad Pro 11" are not interchangeable. Pick your model in the filter.
• Folio or back cover. A folio closes over the screen and protects it in a bag; a back cover is thinner and leaves the screen exposed.
• Stand. Most folios fold the cover into a triangle: one angle for watching, another for typing. A rotating case also turns the screen upright.
• Stylus holder. If you use a stylus, check that the case leaves the magnetic edge free or has its own slot — otherwise the pen lives loose in your bag.
• Universal or model-specific. A universal case is chosen by diagonal (9–11", for example) and fits several devices; a model-specific one is a tighter, slimmer fit.

When you need a rugged case

If the tablet travels with a child, around a warehouse or onto a site, look at the reinforced models: a soft inner frame absorbs the impact, a raised screen lip keeps the glass off the table and a hand strap holds the device in your grip. For school and the office a plain folio is enough.

Does the case put the screen to sleep? Apple Smart Folio and most folio cases do — closing the cover sleeps the screen, opening it wakes the tablet. Cheaper universal cases have no magnet for this.

Does a case work with a screen protector? Yes. Tablet protectors have a rounded 2.5D edge and sit under the frame of the case; edge-to-edge full cover is rare on tablets.

Does a universal case hold securely? It attaches with corner clips or adhesive strips. Clips hold better but can cover part of the screen edge — check where your device has its buttons first.

Can I charge without removing the case? Yes, the port is always left open. Tablets rarely support wireless charging, so case thickness is not an issue here.
