How to choose thermal paste
Thermal paste fills the microscopic gaps between the CPU and the cooler. Dried-out paste is the most common reason an older PC suddenly runs hot and loud.
- Paste or pad. Paste goes on the CPU and GPU die, thermal pads go on memory chips and power stages where the gap is larger.
- Conductivity. Measured in W/mK — the higher the number, the better the heat transfer.
- Graphene sheet. Never dries out or pumps out, handy if you take the cooler off often.
- Liquid metal. Best results, but it conducts electricity and cannot touch aluminium — for experienced users only.
