How to choose thermal paste

Thermal paste fills the microscopic gaps between the CPU and the cooler. Dried-out paste is the most common reason an older PC suddenly runs hot and loud.

Paste or pad. Paste goes on the CPU and GPU die, thermal pads go on memory chips and power stages where the gap is larger.
Conductivity. Measured in W/mK — the higher the number, the better the heat transfer.
Graphene sheet. Never dries out or pumps out, handy if you take the cooler off often.
Liquid metal. Best results, but it conducts electricity and cannot touch aluminium — for experienced users only.

How often should thermal paste be replaced? Every 3–5 years in normal use, or whenever the cooler has been removed.

How much paste should I apply? A pea-sized dot in the centre — too much is as bad as too little.
