How to choose a phone case

A case is the cheapest way to keep a phone intact and its resale value high. The choice starts with two things: the exact model and how you carry the phone.

• The exact model. A case only fits its own model — the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro have different camera blocks and dimensions. Pick the model in the filter, not just the brand.
• Back cover or book case. A back cover is slim and keeps the phone's shape; a book case also covers the screen and holds a couple of cards.
• Material. Silicone is soft and grippy, TPU is clear and inexpensive, aramid (kevlar) is thin and rigid, synthetic leather is warm and understated.
• MagSafe. A case with magnets holds a charger, a car mount and a wallet. A case without magnets does not block charging, but accessories will not sit firmly.
• Raised edges. A lip around the screen and camera is what saves the lens when the phone goes down on a table.

Clear cases and yellowing

Cheap clear TPU turns yellow over time — that is a property of the material, not a fault. Models with an AntiUV treatment last considerably longer, so that is the thing to look for in a clear case.

Will a case from the previous model fit? Usually not. Camera block dimensions change even within a series — buy the case for your exact model.

Does MagSafe work through a case? Through a case with magnets, at full strength. A thin case without magnets does not block charging, but accessories hold weakly.

Silicone or clear? Silicone is more secure in the hand and hides fingerprints; clear keeps the phone's colour visible but needs AntiUV protection.

Does a book case interfere with charging? No, but for MagSafe charging the phone usually has to come out.
