How to choose a waffle maker

Choosing a waffle maker starts with the waffle you actually want: a thin heart-shaped one like in childhood, a thick Belgian square with syrup, or an ice-cream cone.

• Waffle shape. A heart plate (Camry CR 3022, Princess 132384, Tristar WF-2120) bakes a thin five-segment waffle that is soft and can be rolled. A Belgian plate (Mesko MS 3091) gives a thick, crisp waffle with deep pockets. Square plates bake 4 waffles at once (Camry CR 3025, Adler AD 3036 and AD 3049).
• Speciality makers. Bubble waffle (Princess 132465) is the Hong Kong egg waffle rolled around ice cream; a cone maker (Adler AD 3038) bakes a thin sheet you roll into a cone while hot; a nut-biscuit maker (Adler AD 3071) bakes fillable nut- and mushroom-shaped shells.
• Power. 700 W bakes a waffle in 4–5 minutes, 1000–1200 W in 3–4 minutes, and 1500–1800 W (Adler AD 3036, Camry CR 3046, Mesko MS 3091) recovers temperature quickly when you bake dozens in a row.
• Thermostat. An adjustable browning control lets you choose between light and soft or dark and crisp; a basic model has only a ready light.
• Coating and handle. Non-stick coating is standard. A locking handle keeps the plates shut as the batter rises; upright storage saves space.
• Interchangeable plates. If you want waffles, toasties and grilling from one unit, look at a 3-in-1 model (Cecotec Fun Gofrestone) or the TEFAL Snack XL station, for which extra plates can be bought.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the waffle stick to the plate? Usually because the lid was opened too early or the plate was not hot enough. Wait until the steam stops, and on a new maker brush the plate lightly with oil the first time.

Belgian or heart-shaped? A Belgian waffle is thick, deep-pocketed and crisp-crusted — good with syrup and berries. A heart waffle is thin and soft, rolled or spread with jam.

How do I clean the plates? Wipe fixed plates with a damp cloth and a soft brush once cool; removable plates can go in the dishwasher.

How much batter should I pour? Enough to cover the bottom of the pattern without reaching the edge — the batter fills the rest as it rises.
