How to choose a drone

Choosing a drone starts with weight, because it decides which rules and permits apply in Estonia — only then come camera and flight time. Six things decide it.

• Weight and class. Drones under 250 g (C0: DJI Neo, Neo 2, Lito X1, Flip, Mini 4 Pro, Mini 5 Pro) may fly over people and need no exam. Heavier ones (C1–C2: Avata 2, Air 3S, Mavic 4 Pro) require the Transpordiamet online course and A1/A3 exam.
• Camera. 4K/30 is the baseline (Neo), 4K/60 HDR with a 1-inch sensor comes on the Mini 5 Pro and Air 3S; the Mavic 4 Pro shoots 6K on a Hasselblad camera. A three-axis gimbal keeps the picture steady in wind.
• Flight time. The Neo stays up 18 min, Mini 5 Pro and Flip over 30 min, Air 3S and Mavic 4 Pro 45–50 min. Plan on 20% less in practice — wind and the return leg eat the battery.
• Obstacle avoidance. Omnidirectional sensors (Mini 4 Pro, Mini 5 Pro, Air 3S, Mavic 4 Pro) save a beginner from trees and walls. The Neo and Flip rely on propeller guards and suit indoor flying.
• Control. The Neo flies without a controller — from your palm and by voice. The RC-N3 uses your phone as the screen, the RC 2 has its own display and works better in sunlight. FPV drones (Avata) are flown with goggles and a motion controller.
• Bundle. Fly More Combo adds two spare batteries, a charging hub and a bag — it triples your flying day.

Rules in Estonia

A drone with a camera must be registered as an operator with Transpordiamet, including the sub-250 g Mini and Neo — the number is stuck on the drone. Maximum height is 120 m, the drone must stay in line of sight, and no-fly zones (airports, the border zone, military sites) are shown on the Transpordiamet drone map. A drone is a small parcel: a parcel locker in 1–2 working days.

Do I have to register a drone in Estonia? Yes, if it has a camera — which means every DJI drone. Operator registration is done in the Transpordiamet e-service; a sub-250 g drone needs no exam, heavier ones need the A1/A3 online exam.

Which drone for a beginner? DJI Neo 2 or Mini 5 Pro: under 250 g, simple rules, automatic shooting modes. The Mini 5 Pro adds sensors and a better camera.

How long does a drone fly? 18–50 min per battery depending on the model. A Fly More Combo with three batteries gives 1–2 hours in the air.

Is the Fly More Combo worth it? Yes, if you fly more than a couple of times a month — two batteries, a charging hub and a bag cost less bundled than separately.

Where can I fly? Up to 120 m within line of sight, away from airports and crowds; a sub-250 g drone may fly over individual people, a heavier one may not.
