Three kinds of scanner
- Flatbed. Glass and lid: right for photos, books and fragile documents.
- Sheet-fed. Pulls pages through itself, dozens per minute — for accounting and archives.
- Portable. Fits in a bag, runs off USB — for work at the client's desk.
How much resolution
300 dpi is enough for documents; use 600 dpi and above for archiving photos. Duplex scanning reads both sides in one pass, which beats running the stack twice.

Does a phone camera replace a scanner? For a quick snap, yes — but the text comes out skewed and OCR misreads it. Archives need a scanner.
