What is here and what it fits
A compatible cartridge is made by another firm to drop into the original's slot. Four makers are listed – ColorWay (10 products), Fusion (5), UPrint (2) and TFO (2) – and they are built mainly for HP and Canon lasers, plus Samsung and Brother machines.
- HP. The common codes are covered: 05A and 80A, 78A, 79A, CE505A and CE505X, CF280X, CF283A and W2410A.
- Canon. The same cartridges stand in for Canon 719, 319, 726 and 728, as HP and Canon share a shape.
- Samsung and Brother. There are replacements for MLT-D108S, MLT-D111S, MLT-D111L and MLT-D116L, plus a Brother TN-423C equivalent.
- Yield. From 1 000 to 12 500 pages, most in the 1 000 to 2 300 class, like the originals.
Choosing the right one
Choose by the original's code, not the printer name. A compatible cartridge always states what it replaces, for instance in place of HP 05A/80A and Canon 719. Match it against the code now fitted or the label under the printer lid, then confirm with the Compatible with field. These cartridges carry a chip, so the printer recognises them.
If you want the original
Original supplies are on the Brother toners and Lexmark toners pages, and inkjets have Epson ink. The whole range is under ink and toner cartridges; paper is here.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know a compatible cartridge fits my printer? Find the original's code on the old cartridge or under the printer lid, then pick the cartridge whose description names it.
Will the printer recognise a compatible cartridge? Yes, the cartridges on this page carry a chip. Some models show a notice about a non-original cartridge, which does not stop printing.
How does a compatible cartridge differ from the original? It costs less, and its yield is on the product page. In black-and-white work the difference is small; in colour, where a tone must repeat from sheet to sheet, the original has the edge.
