How to choose a curling iron or styler

This category holds everything that puts curls, waves or volume into hair: classic curling irons, hot-air brushes, automatic curlers and stylers with interchangeable heads. Straighteners have their own section — here you will find the tools that work with hot air or a round barrel.

• Type of tool. A curling iron gives a precise curl but needs a steady hand and heat protection. A hot-air brush dries and shapes at the same time — the fastest route to volume on short and mid-length hair. An automatic curler draws the strand into the barrel itself and makes an even curl without practice.
• Barrel diameter. 19–25 mm gives a tight curl, 28–32 mm a natural wave, 38 mm soft volume and big waves. A triple 22/19/22 mm barrel makes beach waves in one pass. Use the diameter filter on the left.
• Temperature. Adjustable heat matters: fine and coloured hair 140–170 °C, normal 180–200 °C, thick up to 210–230 °C. A fixed 200 °C suits strong hair only.
• Coating and ionic care. A ceramic coating heats evenly and glides; tourmaline and ionisation cut static and add shine. On a hot-air brush power counts too — 1000 W and up dries damp hair, 700 W is meant for finishing.
• Heads and extras. A hot-air brush comes with 2–5 heads (round brush, flat brush, concentrator), a styler with up to 10–14 heads from curls to straightening.

Philips covers three classes: 3000 series curling irons, Air Styler brushes and automatic curlers that do the curl for you. BaByliss is the hairdressers' brand — the PRO triple waver and a powerful 1500 W brush. Remington AIRvive and AS7500 are dependable ionic brushes, Cecotec gives the most heads for one price, ETA Fenité is a Czech ceramic series, and Adler and Camry are the budget end of the range.

Frequently asked questions

Hot-air brush or curling iron? If you want quick volume and a light wave in the morning, take a hot-air brush — it dries and shapes at once. For a precise, lasting curl a curling iron is better.

Is ionic care really useful? Yes, especially in winter: ions reduce static so hair does not fly away.

What temperature should I start with? The lowest that holds the curl — 150–160 °C for fine hair, 190–200 °C for thick. Always use a heat protectant, even with a hot-air brush.

Can an automatic curler snag hair? A good model has a guard that stops the motor and releases the strand if it jams. Take a 2–3 cm section at a time and comb it through first.
