How to choose a sandwich maker

A sandwich maker is a simple appliance, yet models differ a lot: one only makes two triangular toasties, another swaps plates and bakes waffles too. Think about what you will actually cook on it.

• Plate shape. Triangular plates seal the edges and cut the sandwich diagonally — the classic melted-cheese toastie. Square plates (ETA Kvadro) leave the sandwich whole and take a thicker filling; a “shell” plate (Tristar SA-3060) closes the filling on every side.
• Number of sandwiches. Most models make 2 at a time, which suits a couple. For a family look at the 4-plate Adler AD 3055 or the XL-format Camry CR 3054, which fit four at once.
• Interchangeable plates. 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 sets add waffle and grill plates to the sandwich plate. One appliance replaces three, but every pair of plates needs somewhere to live.
• Power. 700–750 W is adequate for daily use, 900–1000 W heats up in a couple of minutes and holds temperature even with a cold filling. The 1500 W Cecotec Rock'nToast Family feeds a larger household in one go.
• Coating and cleaning. Non-stick coating is standard. Removable plates go in the dishwasher; fixed plates are wiped with a damp cloth once cool.
• Handle and indicators. A locking handle presses a thick sandwich evenly, and a ready light shows when the plates are hot. Upright storage is a plus in a small kitchen.

Adler and Camry are the dependable budget choice — simple build, 750–1000 W and a price around twenty euros. Tristar offers different plate shapes, including the shell plate and a 3-in-1 set. TEFAL stands out for its interchangeable-plate system and compact body, while ETA Sorento and Kvadro combine a sturdy housing with several plate sets. Philips makes straightforward, reliable 750 W models, Cecotec Rock'nToast are the most powerful units in the range at 1000–1500 W, and Gorenje gives you three plates in one set at a sensible price.

Frequently asked questions

Triangular or square plates? Triangular seal the edges and are the most common; square suit thicker fillings and larger bread.

Can the plates go in the dishwasher? Only removable ones — most 3-in-1 models have them. Fixed plates are wiped with a damp cloth, never held under water.

How long does a toastie take? 3–5 minutes on a 750 W model, 2–4 minutes on 1000 W. The first batch takes longer because the plates have to heat up first.

Is a 4-in-1 set worth it? Yes, if you also make waffles or grill — three separate appliances would cost more. If you only ever use the sandwich plate, a simple model is cheaper.
