Needle size and fabric
- 70/10–80/12 — fine cotton, silk, lining.
- 90/14 — the universal everyday size: cotton, linen, medium fabrics.
- 100/16 and denim needles — denim, canvas, several layers at once.
- Leather needles — a cutting point that pierces leather without tearing it.
The first number is the European size (needle thickness), the second the American one. The rule is simple: the heavier the fabric, the higher the number.
When to change the needle
A needle is a consumable: manufacturers advise changing it every 6–8 hours of sewing or at the start of each project. A blunt needle skips stitches, drags the fabric and breaks thread — most "the machine sews badly" complaints end with a fresh needle.

Frequently asked questions
Do Singer needles fit other machines? Yes. Domestic machine needles follow the 130/705H standard and fit Brother, Janome, Husqvarna and others.
Why does the thread keep breaking? Usually the needle is the wrong size or inserted incorrectly (the flat side faces the back); less often the thread tension is too high.
