How to choose an electric toothbrush
- Technology. Sonic brushes (Philips Sonicare, ETA Sonetic) have an elongated head that cleans with rapid vibrations and is gentle on gums. Oral-B's round head uses an oscillating-rotating motion and works each tooth separately, removing plaque more thoroughly.
- Brushing modes. One mode is enough for plain daily cleaning. Two or three add sensitive and whitening programmes; five or seven make sense when your dentist has recommended a specific routine.
- Power. A rechargeable brush lasts for weeks and comes with a charging base. A battery-operated model is cheaper and lighter — a good pick for a child or for travel.
- Timer and pressure sensor. A two-minute timer keeps you brushing long enough; a quadrant timer splits that time across four areas of the mouth. A pressure sensor warns when you press too hard and protects the gums.
- For whom. Kids models use a smaller head and softer bristles, often with a favourite character on the handle.

Frequently asked questions
Sonic or oscillating? Sonic is gentler on sensitive gums and feels familiar if you are moving from a manual brush. A round oscillating head removes plaque more thoroughly but takes getting used to. Both clean better than a manual brush.
How long does a charge last? A rechargeable brush typically runs two weeks to a month when brushing twice a day. A travel case and charging base help when you are away.
Can a child use an adult brush? Better not: kids models have a smaller head, softer bristles and gentler motion. Manufacturers print the age range on the pack.
Does a pricier model clean better? The basic clean is similar across the range. A more expensive brush adds modes, a pressure sensor, a case and an app — these help you fix your brushing technique rather than clean better on their own.
