How to choose a laptop stand

A laptop screen on a desk sits 20–30 cm too low — hence the neck strain and hunched back. A stand raises the screen to eye level and lets air pass under the machine. Choose one by where and how long you work.

• Height and adjustability. The top edge of the screen should be at eye level, which means raising the laptop by 10–25 cm. A fixed stand is simple and cheap; an adjustable model suits you if the desk or chair changes — filter by height adjustment on the left.
• Screen size and load. Most stands take 10–17″ laptops, some up to 17.3″. A heavy 16–17″ workstation needs a wide, rigid stand or the keyboard will bounce.
• Cooling. An open aluminium stand dissipates heat by itself and lets air under the laptop — enough for most machines. A fan-cooled stand makes sense for a gaming laptop.
• Material and stability. Aluminium is rigid and light, steel heavier and steadier, wood fits an interior. Rubber pads keep everything in place.
• Portability and extras. A travel stand weighs 200–400 g and folds to fit in a bag. A built-in USB-C hub solves the port shortage; a vertical holder keeps a closed laptop upright on the desk.
