How to choose an electric grill

An electric grill is a way to grill all year round — in the kitchen, on the balcony or the terrace, without charcoal or smoke. The range splits into three: the contact grill that cooks both sides at once, the flat table grill for a group, and the multi-grill with swappable plates.

• Type. A contact grill presses food between two hot plates — chicken breast or a panini is ready in 5–7 minutes. A table grill is an open plate where everyone turns their own piece. A multi-grill swaps plates: ribbed for meat, flat for pancakes, a waffle plate for breakfast.
• Power. 700–1000 W is enough for sandwiches and two portions, 1500–2000 W holds its temperature when cold meat goes on, 2200–2800 W is the level of a large table grill or outdoor grill. Use the power filter on the left.
• Plate size. A 25–30 cm plate does for two; for a family choose 40 cm or 1000 cm². On a contact grill, check whether the top plate opens flat to 180° — then you get two surfaces instead of one.
• Plates and cleaning. Removable dishwasher-safe plates are the biggest convenience; fixed plates are wiped once cool. A non-stick or stone coating stops meat sticking.
• Fat drainage. A tilted plate and a separate drip tray make food lighter and cleaning easier.
• Thermostat and automation. An adjustable thermostat lets you cook fish cooler and steak hotter; the Tefal OptiGrill measures the thickness of the piece and signals when it is done.

Multi-grills with swappable plates: Adler AD 3040 with five plates, Gorenje GCG2000M and Tristar PZ-9135. For the balcony and terrace there is the outdoor grill Barbecook E-Carlo (2500 W) in three colours. We do not currently stock raclette grills.

Brands

Tefal OptiGrill is the benchmark contact grill — a sensor measures the meat's thickness and picks the cooking time itself. Bosch means solid build and 2000 W. Philips table grills are known for a large surface and stone coating. Tristar covers the budget end with both contact and table grills, while Adler and Mesko give plenty of watts for little money. Gorenje is a sensible mid-range, Cecotec a compact contact grill and Barbecook the only true outdoor grill in the range.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an electric grill on a balcony? Yes — there is no open flame and little smoke, so it is allowed where a charcoal grill is not.

Contact grill or table grill? A contact grill is faster and suits everyday chicken breast or a sandwich. A table grill is for company — everyone sits around the table and grills their own.

How much power do I need for meat? At least 1500 W, ideally 2000 W. A weaker grill cools when cold meat goes on and the meat starts to stew rather than brown.

Can the plates go in the dishwasher? Removable ones usually can; check the product page. Wipe fixed plates once they have cooled.

How is the grill delivered? Contact and table grills fit a parcel locker (Omniva, DPD, Venipak, 1–2 working days); the large outdoor grill comes by courier.
