When two UniFi gateways run in Shadow Mode, one is active and the other waits on standby, ready to take over immediately. Your provider, however, usually hands you a single connection. The USW-WAN sits between them: the provider cable goes into the switch, and both gateways receive the same WAN link from there. If the active gateway fails, nobody has to go into the server room and move cables around.
The three SFP+ slots take 10-gigabit modules, so the link between the gateways and the provider can be fibre or copper, using whichever module the line requires. There is also one RJ-45 port at 10/100/1000 Mbit/s for an ordinary network cable. The stated switching capacity is 20 Gbit/s, which leaves plenty of headroom for sharing one WAN link between two gateways.
