Description

Password protection that keeps prying eyes out

What sets the Secure version apart from the regular Mobile Drive is password protection: if the drive is left on a cafe table or lost on a trip, its contents stay locked without the password. For backups LaCie provides its Toolkit software, which handles one-click backups, scheduled automatic backups and folder mirroring across several devices.

Who this external hard drive is for

Mac users who want a portable backup drive for photos, videos and documents; freelancers and consultants who carry client files around and want them locked behind a password; and anyone whose computer only has USB-C or Thunderbolt ports left.

Questions & answers

Does the drive work with Windows?

The supplier specification lists macOS as the supported system and marks Windows support as no. The manufacturer's description says the password protection also works on Windows, but only Mac support is clearly confirmed.

Can I plug it into a Thunderbolt port?

Yes, the drive is compatible with Thunderbolt ports, and the description also names Thunderbolt 4 and USB4. Speed is still set by the drive's own USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface, which tops out at 5 Gbit/s.

Is a cable included?

Yes, a USB-C cable is in the box. If your computer only has USB-A ports you will need a separate adapter, as none is included.
