Description

4 TB for an entire project

4 TB holds all the source footage of a long film project, years of photo archive or backups of several computers on one drive. When a shoot runs over several days, you do not have to decide each evening what to delete, and all the material stays in one place, ready to edit. When the project is finished, the drive becomes an archive that fits in a desk drawer.

A 20 Gbit/s link for fast offloading

USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is the fastest variant of the USB 3.2 standard, with a data rate of 20 Gbit/s. Through it the drive reads at up to 2000 MB/s, provided the computer port also supports Gen 2x2 mode. The drive also works in Thunderbolt 4 and older USB-C ports, but the speed depends on the USB mode the port supports. The manufacturer does not list a separate write speed.

A housing built for work in the field

The manufacturer rates the housing as drop, dust and water resistant, with an IP54 rating: the 5 stands for protection against dust and the 4 for protection against splashing water from any direction. It will cope with rain or a dusty location, but it is not designed to be submerged. The grey and orange housing is made of aluminium and plastic.

Big capacity in a small body

Despite its 4 TB, the drive measures only 66.9 × 105.3 × 17.3 mm and weighs 114 g, so it fits in a jacket pocket or a camera bag. The included USB-C cable lets you plug it straight into a current laptop or an iPad. As an SSD with no moving parts, it is far less sensitive to knocks than a hard drive with spinning platters.

Works with Mac, Windows and iPad

According to the manufacturer, the drive supports Windows, macOS and iPadOS. Plugged into an iPad's USB-C port, it lets you open files straight from the drive and free up space on the tablet. If you switch the drive between a Mac and a Windows PC, format it with a file system both understand, such as exFAT. Formatting erases everything on the drive, so do it before first use.

Who this external SSD is for

Filmmakers and videographers whose projects run into terabytes; photographers who carry their entire archive; and freelancers who need one tough drive for both working material and backups instead of a bag full of smaller drives.

Questions & answers

Is the drive waterproof?

The drive is rated IP54: it is protected against dust and splashing water from any direction. It can handle rain and splashes, but it is not designed to go under water.

Does it have password protection or encryption?

No, according to the manufacturer this model has no password protection. If needed, data can be encrypted with operating system tools such as BitLocker or FileVault.

Does it work with an iPad?

Yes, the manufacturer lists iPadOS support. The drive connects to the iPad's USB-C port with the included USB-C cable.

Why does my computer not reach 2000 MB/s?

Speeds of up to 2000 MB/s require the computer's USB-C port to support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 mode. In a port with a slower USB mode the drive still works, but within that port's speed.
