Description

4 TB of space with automatic backups

Four terabytes hold years of photos and video plus several versions of a full laptop backup. LaCie Toolkit can run a backup with one click or on a schedule, and it can also mirror folders across several devices. Password protection means the contents of a lost drive stay out of reach for anyone else.

Who this external hard drive is for

Photographers and video makers whose archive has outgrown 2 TB; Mac users who want a separate portable copy alongside Time Machine; and small businesses that keep client data on an external drive and need it locked behind a password.

Questions & answers

How does it differ from the 2 TB model?

Besides twice the capacity, the 4 TB model is thicker and heavier: 20.4 mm and 300 g, compared with 10.4 mm and 200 g for the 2 TB version. Connection, speed and password protection are the same.

How fast do files transfer?

The interface is USB 3.2 Gen 1 with a ceiling of 5 Gbit/s. Real speed also depends on the computer's port and on the files themselves: lots of small files always copy more slowly than one large video.

Does the drive work with Windows?

The supplier specification lists macOS as the supported system and marks Windows as not supported. The manufacturer's description says the password protection also works on Windows, but only Mac support is clearly confirmed.
