How to choose a TV mount

A TV mount is bought once and has to hold for years. Check five things before you buy — they are also the filters on the left.

• VESA pattern. The spacing of the mounting holes on the back of the TV in millimetres: 200×200 is typical for 32–43″, 400×400 for 55–65″, 600×400 and 800×400 for large 75–100″ screens.
• Screen size and weight. The maker states a range, say 32–65″ and up to 45 kg. A modern 65″ TV weighs 20–30 kg, an 85″ set 40–60 kg, so leave a margin of at least 20%.
• Mount type. A fixed bracket keeps the TV 2–3 cm from the wall and costs the least. A tilting one (10–15°) suits a screen above eye level. A full-motion arm pulls the TV 50–70 cm out from the wall and swivels ±90°.
• Wall material. Concrete and solid brick carry any mount. On plasterboard, always screw into the timber studs or use dedicated hollow-wall anchors, and pick a lighter bracket.
• Cables and extras. Check there is room for the leads and whether a spirit level and fixings are included.

Neomounts is a Dutch brand with the widest selection: wall mounts from 10 to 110″, ceiling mounts and professional carts. Onkron specialises in mobile floor stands in black, white, graphite and champagne. Vogel's stands for premium wall mounts — the UP 9003 carries 120 kg. EDBAK is a Polish maker of project-grade hardware: meeting rooms, signage, lockable brackets and models with anti-drop protection. Gembird, Goobay, LogiLink and Sunne cover the budget end — a sound bracket for a couple of tens of euros.

Installation and delivery

Seated, the centre of the screen should sit 100–120 cm off the floor. Small brackets go to an Omniva, DPD or Venipak parcel locker in 1–2 working days; floor stands and carts arrive by bulky-goods courier anywhere in Estonia.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my TV's VESA size? Measure the distance between the mounting holes on the back horizontally and vertically in millimetres, for example 400×200.

Can a full-motion mount go on plasterboard? For a light TV (up to 40″) yes, provided the screws go into the timber studs. A full-motion arm for a large screen belongs in concrete or brick.

What does a floor stand offer over a wall mount? No drilling, the stand can be repositioned and a cart can be wheeled to another room. The downside is lost floor space.

Will a mount work with a curved TV? Most will if the VESA pattern and weight match; for a curved screen prefer a full-motion or tilting model.

How much weight margin should I leave? At least 20% of the TV's weight: for a 25 kg set choose a mount rated for 30 kg or more, soundbar included.
