10-gigabit fibre beyond 100 metres
Fibre beats copper when a link has to run past 100 metres, or when electromagnetic interference, tampering or eavesdropping are a concern. VLAN filtering and some Layer 3 routing are offloaded to the switch chip rather than the CPU. The Ethernet port connects straight to the chip for full gigabit speed and also accepts PoE-in.
