MikroTik CRS418-8P-8G-2S+5axQ2axQ-RM network switch Wi-Fi 6, 8 × PoE, 2 × SFP+

The key difference from the standard CRS418 is a built-in dual-band Wi-Fi 6 radio using 4×4 MIMO. A 4×4 design means four transmit and receive chains, which helps serve several devices at the same time. For a basement server room or a mid-sized office, this means a separate access point may not be needed at all: switch, router and Wi-Fi come together in one device.

A metal rackmount case is not the friendliest place for radio signals, and MikroTik has taken that into account. The rear panel has dedicated holes for pigtail cables, so the antennas can be placed outside the case, for example on top of the rack or on a wall. That way the signal reaches the room more effectively and Wi-Fi stays usable even when the unit itself sits in a closed cabinet.

Of the sixteen Gigabit ports, eight supply power to 802.3af and 802.3at, so additional access points, IP cameras and phones can be powered straight from the switch. Two SFP+ cages support 10 Gbit/s links for an uplink or a fast NAS. The manufacturer does not list a separate total PoE power figure for this edition.

A quad-core 2.2 GHz ARM CPU and RouterOS let the unit route traffic, monitor the network and use Layer 3 hardware offloading on top of switching. A dedicated Gigabit management port is wired directly to the CPU, and the USB 3.2 Gen 1 port accepts a USB drive. The case measures 443 × 250 × 44 mm and runs on 100–240 V AC, with typical consumption of 43 W and a maximum of 227 W, an operating range of −20 to 70 °C and an IP20 rating. The manufacturer quotes a mean time between failures (MTBF) of 200,000 hours.

Mid-sized offices and small businesses that want to combine switch, router and Wi-Fi in a single rack device; work areas close to a server or utility room where installing a separate access point is awkward; and administrators who prefer fewer devices and one RouterOS interface to manage. It also suits sites where the server room has grown piece by piece and one box should replace a switch, a router and an access point.
