Description

Two power supplies so service is not interrupted

The RP in the model name stands for a redundant power supply: if one supply or power feed fails, the NAS keeps running on the other. Power supply capacity is 150 W; in typical use the unit draws 46.07 W, and 20.1 W with the drives in standby. Three 40 mm fans cool the chassis, and the noise level is 41.2 dB.

Four network ports and a high-availability cluster

The four 1GbE RJ-45 ports can be bonded with Link Aggregation into one channel that balances load and takes over traffic if a port fails. Two RS826RP+ units can be paired with Synology High Availability into an active/passive server cluster: if the main unit stops, the second carries on. Shared folders and applications stay available during maintenance too.

Memory and a PCIe slot with room to grow

The NAS ships with 4 GB of DDR4 ECC memory as a SO-DIMM module and has two memory slots, taking up to 32 GB in total. Synology lists faster networking and a local SSD cache as expansion options, and the chassis has a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot for that. Synology Tiering automatically moves infrequently accessed data to a more cost-efficient tier, so the unit works for both hot and cold storage.

RAID, hot spare and snapshots

The four hot-swap bays accept 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SATA III hard drives and SSDs. Supported are RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and JBOD, plus a hot spare that automatically replaces a failed drive and online RAID migration without downtime. Snapshots bring back files that were deleted or changed by mistake, and iSCSI provides block storage for virtual machines.

Backup, collaboration and surveillance in DSM

DiskStation Manager includes Active Backup for Business, which protects Windows, Mac and Linux computers, Synology servers and VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines, including to Synology C2 cloud storage. There is also Synology Office, an on-premises mail server, chat and AI assistance via API key. Surveillance supports over 20,000 IP camera models, all managed in a browser.

Who this NAS is for

Small and medium-sized businesses whose file server or backup system cannot stop because of a power outage or a failed port. IT departments building a two-unit High Availability cluster or needing iSCSI storage for virtual machines, and branch offices with room for only one rack unit in the server cabinet.

Questions & answers

Are drives included?

No, the NAS ships without drives. It takes four 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA III hard drives or SSDs.

What does RP in the name mean?

RP stands for a redundant power supply. With the two power cords connected to separate power sources, the NAS keeps running when one of them goes down.

How much memory can be installed?

The unit has 4 GB of DDR4 ECC SO-DIMM memory and two memory slots. The maximum supported capacity is 32 GB.

Can I add 10GbE or an SSD cache?

Synology names both as expansion options, and the chassis has a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot. The card is not included, and the manufacturer data does not list compatible models.

How loud is it?

The manufacturer lists a noise level of 41.2 dB. This is a server cabinet device rather than a quiet NAS for the office desk.
