Synology RS1226+ rackmount NAS, 8 bays, AMD Ryzen V1500B, 4 GB ECC, 2 × 2.5GbE

The Synology RS1226+ is an eight-bay rackmount NAS that brings company files, backups and shared folders together in one box in the server cabinet. Inside are a quad-core AMD Ryzen V1500B and 4 GB of ECC memory, it connects through two 2.5GbE ports, and drives can be swapped while it keeps running.

Description

Eight hot-swap bays in a rackmount chassis

RS series units are built for the server cabinet, so this one sits on the same rack as your switch and other network gear. All eight 3.5-inch bays are hot-swappable: a failed drive is replaced without powering the NAS down, and users carry on working in the meantime. Two fans keep the chassis cool, and the unit weighs 6.8 kg.

A Ryzen processor and ECC memory that keep data clean

The AMD Ryzen V1500B is a quad-core processor at 2.2 GHz, with enough headroom for file sharing, backup jobs and several users at the same time. The 4 GB of DDR4 memory is ECC: it detects and corrects single-bit memory errors before they can reach the data being written to disk.

Two 2.5GbE ports for faster file traffic

Two 2.5-gigabit network ports give a link rate 2.5 times that of a standard gigabit port, provided your switch supports 2.5GbE as well. With an older switch the NAS still works, just at gigabit speed. The two USB 3.2 ports take an external drive, for example to carry a backup copy off site.

RAID and SHR: one failed drive does not mean lost data

RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10 are supported, along with Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR). RAID 5 survives one drive failure and RAID 6 two, without data loss. SHR is more flexible: it makes use of drives of different sizes, and the array can later be expanded with larger drives.

Who this NAS is for

Companies that already have a server cabinet and want files, PC backups and shared folders kept in their own office. Also IT partners building eight-drive storage for their clients, and home lab owners who care about ECC memory and a 2.5GbE network.

Questions & answers

Are drives included?

Neither the title nor the manufacturer data lists drives as part of the package, so plan for drives separately. The bays take 3.5-inch drives.

What is SHR and when should I use it?

SHR, or Synology Hybrid RAID, spreads data so that a single drive failure does not cause data loss, and it uses the capacity of mixed-size drives efficiently. It suits setups where you plan to add drives or swap in larger ones step by step.

Do the 2.5GbE ports work on a regular gigabit network?

Yes. A 2.5GbE port negotiates a lower speed with the switch, so the NAS also runs on a 1GbE network. For full speed, the switch or the computer network card must support 2.5GbE as well.
