The TRB500 does not broadcast Wi-Fi and is not aimed at home users. Its job is to receive the 5G signal and pass it over a single cable to whatever needs internet access: an industrial controller, a video recorder, a kiosk or a company router. With no radio network of its own, it is simpler to configure and secure, and it does not interfere with other Wi-Fi networks nearby.
For mobile connectivity the gateway has four SMA connectors. Four antennas make MIMO possible, where several antennas send and receive at once, helping to keep the connection fast and stable. SMA connectors let you place the antennas outside the cabinet, on a wall, roof or mast, where reception is better than inside a metal enclosure.
The gateway has one RJ-45 port at 10/100/1000 Mbit/s. A gigabit port does not hold back the 5G link, so the full capacity of the mobile connection reaches the device attached to it. When several devices need to be connected, a switch or router is placed after the gateway to share the connection further.
The TRB500 runs Teltonika RutOS, which is based on the open-source OpenWrt Linux. OpenWrt is widely used in networking equipment, so its logic is familiar to many administrators. The Linux foundation means flexible configuration and the ability to tailor the gateway precisely to your own network rules.
The gateway weighs only 0.24 kg, so it puts no strain on a control cabinet or its mounts. The compact unit fits into a tight cabinet next to a machine or piece of equipment where a larger router would not. The light housing is also handy when the gateway has to travel from site to site.
