The TP-Link RE660X is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 range extender that picks up your existing router's signal and carries it on into rooms the coverage no longer reaches well. It supports the 802.11ax standard and works on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

  • Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
  • Bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
  • MU-MIMO: no
  • Power: no PoE
  • Weight: 0.38 kg

Description

Wi-Fi 6 coverage in the far rooms too

The extender goes where the router signal is still strong and repeats the network onward towards the weak spot. Two bands give you a choice: 2.4 GHz gets through walls better, while 5 GHz has a shorter reach but is faster. The Wi-Fi 6 standard copes better with many devices connected at once, as long as the router and the devices support it too.

Who this range extender is for

Flats and houses where the router sits at one end and the signal is weak in the bedroom, the kitchen or upstairs; home offices where a laptop needs a steadier connection; and anyone who would rather extend the existing network than replace the router.

Questions & answers

How large an area does the extender cover?

The manufacturer does not specify a range. The result depends on walls, router placement and interference; place the extender roughly halfway between the router and the weak area.

Does the extender need a Wi-Fi 6 router?

No. Wi-Fi standards are backward compatible, but the benefits of Wi-Fi 6 only show in full when the router also supports 802.11ax.

Does the RE660X support MU-MIMO or PoE?

No. According to the manufacturer, this model has neither MU-MIMO nor PoE.
