How to choose a UPS
A UPS keeps your PC, NAS or router running when the power goes and smooths out the voltage swings that otherwise shorten the life of electronics. The choice starts with one question: what are you protecting and for how long.
- Capacity in VA and W. Always look at watts, not volt-amperes: a 650 VA UPS often delivers only 360 W, a quality 1500 VA model 900–1500 W. Add up your devices' draw and leave 30% headroom — a 300 W PC with monitor suits a 650–850 VA UPS.
- Topology. A line-interactive UPS with AVR corrects voltage without switching to battery and suits home and office. An online (double-conversion) UPS feeds the load through the inverter constantly with 0 ms transfer — for servers, network cabinets and medical equipment.
- Output waveform. Simulated sine is cheaper and fine for a router or NAS. A PC power supply with active PFC and a gaming rig need pure sine wave, or the UPS may drop the load when it switches to battery.
- Runtime. A 600 VA model keeps a 15 W router alive for over an hour, a 300 W PC for 5–8 minutes. If you need half an hour, go for 1500 VA or a model with an extended battery (XL).
- Outlets and interfaces. Schuko sockets for home use, IEC C13 for server and monitor leads. A USB or network port lets a NAS or PC shut itself down safely before the battery runs flat.
UPS units in our range
The widest part is line-interactive UPS units from 450 to 2200 VA: Eaton 3S, 5E, 5S and 5P, APC Back-UPS BX and Back-UPS Pro BR, APC Easy UPS BV, CyberPower BU, UT, VP and BR, EnerGenie, Digitus, FSP FP and Dahua PFM. Pure sine wave models for PCs are the FSP FP 600 and 1500, CyberPower CP1600EPFCLCD, EnerGenie EG-UPS-036 and the RGB-lit APC Back-UPS Pro Gaming 2200 VA. Online UPS units of 1000–3000 VA (Eaton 9E, 9SX and 9PX, CyberPower OLS, FSP CHAMP, APC Easy UPS SRV) are for the server room. Rack models in 1U–2U come from the CyberPower OR and PR, Eaton 5SC and 9E-IR, EnerGenie RACK and APC Smart-UPS series; business UPS units APC Smart-UPS SMT and SMC with SmartConnect cloud management and Eaton 5PX are built for the company cabinet.
Brands
Eaton leads in server and industrial power — the 5P and 9PX series are known for long battery life and software. APC (Schneider Electric) Back-UPS is synonymous with the home UPS, and Smart-UPS SmartConnect can be monitored from the cloud. CyberPower offers many LCD models with a good watt-to-VA ratio. FSP and EnerGenie are the cheapest way to get pure sine or a rack unit, Digitus makes practical units with mixed Schuko and IEC sockets, Dahua and Trust cover the budget end.

Put your NAS and router behind the UPS first — they cope worst with a sudden cut. The desktop PC and switch come next. The full selection is in computers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between VA and W? VA is apparent power, W is real power. The ratio (power factor) is 0.6 on cheap units and 0.9–1.0 on professional ones. Devices draw watts, so size the UPS by watts.
How big a UPS for a NAS and router? 650 VA / 360 W keeps a two-bay NAS and a router running for 20–40 minutes. Pick a model with a USB port — Synology and QNAP use it to shut down safely on their own.
Does a gaming PC need pure sine wave? Yes. Powerful active-PFC power supplies may switch off within seconds on simulated sine. Look at FSP FP, CyberPower CP or APC Back-UPS Pro.
How long does the battery last? A lead-acid battery lasts 3–5 years depending on temperature. Replacements are sold separately and are usually user-replaceable.
How is a UPS delivered? Models up to 1500 VA go to a parcel locker or by courier in 1–2 working days; heavier rack units come by courier.
