iPhone 18 Pro vs 17 Pro: review and price in Estonia

What changed from the iPhone 17 Pro

In short, the iPhone 18 Pro is a refined iPhone 17 Pro: Apple left the design and display alone but upgraded everything that affects photography, speed and battery life. The table lists only what changed, based on Apple's official specifications for the European models.

What stayed the same: the 6.3″ (2622×1206) and 6.9″ (2868×1320) displays with ProMotion up to 120 Hz and up to 3,000 nits outdoors, the body dimensions (150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm and 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm), the 48 MP Ultra Wide and the 4× telephoto with 8× optical-quality zoom, the 18 MP Center Stage front camera, Face ID, Camera Control and the Action button, IP68 (6 m for 30 minutes), USB-C at USB 3 speeds and the N1 wireless chip with Wi-Fi 7.

Camera: variable aperture and manual controls

The headline upgrade this year is a variable aperture on the 48 MP main camera. Six laser-cut blades move between four positions: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0. Wide open, the lens lets in roughly 45 % more light than the iPhone 17 Pro's ƒ/1.78 — less noise and faster shutter speeds in the dark. Stopped down, it increases depth of field: a group of people and the landscape behind them both stay sharp, and natural background blur comes without Portrait mode.

The rest of the camera system is unchanged: the 48 MP Ultra Wide (13 mm, ƒ/2.2), the 48 MP 4× telephoto (100 mm, ƒ/2.8) with 8× optical-quality zoom (200 mm) and digital zoom up to 40×. Video goes up to 4K 120 fps in Dolby Vision, with ProRes RAW for professionals. If you mostly shoot in daylight on auto, you will notice the difference from the 17 Pro mainly in the evening and indoors.

A20 Pro, cooling and the Siri AI Estonia does not get yet

The A20 Pro is Apple's first 2-nanometre smartphone chip. Apple says graphics are up to 40 % faster, memory bandwidth is 50 % higher and the dual 16-core Neural Engine delivers twice the AI compute of the A19 Pro. In early Geekbench runs (reported by MacRumors) the A20 Pro scores about 4,720 single-core and 12,600 multi-core — 21–23 % and 27–28 % higher than the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple does not disclose the amount of RAM.

Cooling matters more than peak speed. The 18 Pro's vapour chamber has three times the surface area of the 17 Pro's, and Apple promises up to 40 % higher sustained performance: in games, 4K video recording and photo-editing apps the phone holds its clock speeds for longer.

There is an important caveat for Estonia. The biggest feature of iOS 27 — the new Siri AI that understands what is on screen and your personal context — is not available in the EU at launch. Apple says so in its press release, citing its dispute with the European Commission, and gives no timeline. So AI is not a reason to upgrade right now: when Siri AI reaches Europe, it will run on the iPhone 17 Pro too.

Connectivity: Apple's own C2 modem (which Apple says delivers meaningfully faster uploads and uses 15 % less energy than the C1X), Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. The European model keeps a nano-SIM slot alongside eSIM — unlike the US model and the foldable iPhone Duo, which are eSIM-only.

Battery and charging: +3 hours on the Pro, +6 hours on the Pro Max

This is where the 18 Pro Max takes its biggest step: Apple calls it the largest increase in battery life ever on iPhone. For European models with a SIM slot the figures are: iPhone 18 Pro — up to 34 hours of video (17 Pro: 31 hours), iPhone 18 Pro Max — up to 43 hours (17 Pro Max: 37). The trade-off is weight: the Pro Max gained 18 grams, reaching 249 g.

Wired charging is faster: 50 % in about 15 minutes, but only with a USB-C adapter rated at 60 W or more. The box contains just a 1 m USB-C cable, so with an old 20 W brick the phone charges noticeably more slowly. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging run at up to 25 W, reaching 50 % in 30 minutes with a 35 W+ adapter; last year's MagSafe chargers and magnetic power banks work too.

Design, colours and whether 17 Pro cases fit

The 18 Pro and 17 Pro share the same body dimensions to a tenth of a millimetre, but the camera plateau is slightly taller — by 0.1–0.5 mm depending on who measured it. That is why Apple does not officially list 17 Pro cases as compatible with the 18 Pro. In practice many cases go on, but with snug designs the lenses may end up flush with the case lip and unprotected if the phone drops onto a table. The reverse — an 18 Pro case on an iPhone 17 Pro — fits almost always, according to case makers.

Colours: black, silver, light-blue glacier and the new burgundy. Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue stay with the previous generation — if those are the shades you want, that is one more argument for the 17 Pro.

Price in Estonia: the 18 Pro vs a cheaper 17 Pro

Apple has no store of its own in Estonia; iPhones are sold by local retailers and carriers. As of 23 September 2026 the lowest price for the iPhone 18 Pro 256 GB on the price-comparison site hind.ee is €1,508 (14 shops), and Euronics charges €1,539. The Pro Max starts at €1,658. For comparison, the Apple Store charges €1,449 for the 18 Pro in Germany and €1,509 in Finland; the gap is mostly VAT (24 % in Estonia).

The table shows the lowest hind.ee prices as of 23.09.2026; they change daily. The conclusion is simple: the new generation costs more. In Germany Apple raised the starting price by €150 (the 17 Pro launched at €1,299, the 18 Pro at €1,449) and the 1 TB models by as much as €400. Meanwhile the iPhone 17 Pro already sells in Estonia from €1,099 — €409 less than a new 18 Pro with the same storage.

Whichever EU shop you buy from, you get Apple's one-year warranty plus the seller's two-year liability for hidden defects under EU law.

Who should upgrade and who should not

It all comes down to which phone you are coming from and how much you are willing to pay for the difference.

• From an iPhone 17 ProNot worth it. The display, design and telephoto are the same, and Siri AI is not in the EU yet. The exception: if you shoot a lot at night or manually and want the variable aperture.
• From an iPhone 16 Pro or 15 ProA sensible time: a faster chip, a 48 MP 4× telephoto and noticeably longer battery life. But compare with the 17 Pro — it delivers most of those gains for about €400 less.
• From an iPhone 14 Pro or olderThe difference will be huge either way. Take the 18 Pro if the budget allows, or the 17 Pro to save money without noticeable compromises.
• If battery life matters mostThe 18 Pro Max: +6 hours of video over the 17 Pro Max — the biggest gain in the line-up.
• If you want a foldable iPhoneLook at the iPhone Duo: the same A20 Pro and a 7.6″ display, but no telephoto and about €700 more than the 18 Pro Max.
• Wait for the regular iPhone 18?Apple did not show the base model in September; according to MacRumors it arrives in spring 2027 and will not get Pro-level cameras.

Verdict

The iPhone 18 Pro is the best iPhone you can buy today, but it is not a revolution. Apple kept the 17 Pro's design and display and invested in what you feel every day: low-light photography, manual camera control, cooling and, on the Pro Max, battery life. If you are buying a flagship for three or four years and take a lot of photos, the 18 Pro is the right choice.

17 Pro owners have no reason to upgrade. And anyone moving from an older iPhone on a budget should take a serious look at the 17 Pro: around €1,100 for nearly the same phone is the best deal this autumn. The €400 difference buys a good case, a screen protector and a MagSafe charger, with money to spare.
