When GTA 6 comes out and why it took so long

The official release date is Thursday, 19 November 2026, worldwide, Estonia included. If you pre-order, you can load the game onto your console a week early, from 12 November, so you will not spend launch night waiting for hundreds of gigabytes to download.

The date has slipped twice. In the first trailer in December 2023, Rockstar promised the game for 2025. In May 2025 the launch moved to 26 May 2026, and in November 2025 it moved another six months. Both times the reason was the same: the extra months are needed to finish the game to the level of polish players expect from Rockstar.

Could it slip again? There is nothing to suggest so. Pre-orders are open, shops have the date in their systems, and both Rockstar’s website and the Game Informer story from late September still say 19 November. Talk of 2027 online is, so far, just rumour.

Every official GTA 6 video

Rockstar has released three major videos. The two trailers introduce the story and characters, while August’s ‘An Extended Look’ is the first long look at the gameplay itself. All of them come from Rockstar’s official YouTube channel and only load when you click them.

What ‘An Extended Look’ shows: driving, shootouts, robberies, scuba diving, airboat rides, parachuting and Vice City at night. One detail matters for console owners: according to Rockstar, all of it was captured in-game on a standard PlayStation 5 – not a PS5 Pro and not a high-end PC.

How much GTA 6 costs in Estonia

The price is almost the same everywhere. On PlayStation Store the standard edition is €79.99 and the Ultimate Edition €99.99. In Estonian shops the boxed PS5 version is available to pre-order for €79.05–80.00: hinnavaatlus.ee lists eight offers, most of them exactly €79.99. The boxed Xbox version also starts at €79.05.

There is no disc in the box

The boxed copy of GTA 6 contains a download code, not a disc. That means two things: it works on the disc-less PS5 Digital Edition, and you will have to download the full game either way. Boxes reach shops on 12 November, so you can still pre-load with a code.

One thing for PS5 owners: the region of the code in the box has to match your PlayStation account’s country. According to Level1, a box bought in Finland, for example, can only be redeemed on a Finnish account – so with an Estonian account, buy the box from an Estonian shop. Xbox has no such restriction.

The Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus includes a 1955 Vapid Stanier sedan with a garage by Ocean Beach, flashy outfits and hairstyles for Jason and Lucia, and a weapon pattern. Pre-ordering on PlayStation Store also adds one month of GTA+. Note that it renews automatically as a paid subscription unless you switch it off.

GTA 6 edition DualSense controllers

Sony is releasing two limited-edition DualSense controllers for the game: white (Vice City by day) and black (Vice City by night). The recommended price is €84.99 and they also launch on 19 November. In Estonian shops the white one is up for pre-order from €87.49 and the black one at €89.99 (hinnavaatlus.ee, 30.09). Sony officially sells the black controller only through its own PlayStation Direct store, and there are just two offers in Estonia right now.

Which console to play GTA 6 on – and what about PC

GTA 6 is coming only to current-generation consoles: PlayStation 5 (every model, including the PS5 Pro), Xbox Series X and Series S. It is not coming to the older PS4 or Xbox One.

Rockstar has not announced a PC version. History suggests PC players will have to wait: GTA V reached PC about a year and a half after consoles (2013 → 2015), and Red Dead Redemption 2 about a year later (2018 → 2019). If the pattern repeats, a PC version would arrive in 2027 at the earliest – but there is no official word on it.

Sony markets GTA 6 as ‘playing best on PS5’. That is a marketing line, not a confirmed technical advantage. Rockstar has not officially announced the frame rate (30 or 60 frames per second) or a separate PS5 Pro graphics mode.

If you do not have a console yet

On 2 April 2026 Sony raised PS5 prices in Europe by €100 – according to analysts, because memory chips have become more expensive. As of 30 September, Estonian shops sell the PS5 Digital Edition from €640, the PS5 Slim with a disc drive from €699 and the PS5 Pro from €999.90 (lowest prices on hinnavaatlus.ee). You do not need a disc drive for GTA 6, because the boxed version is a code anyway.

• PS5 Digital EditionThe cheapest way to play GTA 6 on PlayStation. About 667 GB is free for games, enough for GTA 6 and a couple of other big titles.
• PS5 Slim with disc driveWorth it if you own PS4 or PS5 games on disc. For GTA 6 itself the drive is no use.
• PS5 ProA 2 TB drive and a more powerful GPU. Worth buying if you play a lot of demanding games; any GTA 6 advantages on Pro are not confirmed yet.
• Xbox Series SCheap, but only about 364 GB of its 512 GB drive is free for games. Next to GTA 6 there is room for very little else.

What GTA 6 is about: Leonida, Vice City and new details

GTA 6 is set in the fictional state of Leonida, modelled on Florida. At its heart is Vice City, the Miami-inspired city fans remember from 2002’s GTA: Vice City. There are two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. In Rockstar’s words, an ‘easy score’ goes wrong and the pair end up in the middle of a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the whole state, forced to rely on each other more than ever.

Rockstar’s official site splits Leonida into six regions:

• Vice CityA big city of skyscrapers, beaches, marinas and nightlife.
• Leonida KeysAn island chain with bridges, lagoons and seaplanes.
• GrassriversSwampy wetlands that alligators call home.
• Port GellhornA coastal town of old motels.
• AmbrosiaA small town where biker gangs roam.

What Game Informer revealed on 29 September

Game Informer’s 14-page cover story focuses on how alive Leonida feels. The key new facts:

• WeatherWeather is local: the sun can shine in one district while it rains in another. There are tropical storms and hurricanes, and strong wind moves trees and structures.
• WildlifeMore than 170 species: over 60 kinds of birds and over 30 land mammals, plus fish and reptiles – manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators among them.
• PeopleResidents vary in height and build, and in freckles, tanning and tattoos.
• ImagesThe issue includes 12 new screenshots and new artwork of Jason and Lucia.

Age rating

GTA 6 is rated PEGI 18 (currently marked as provisional on PlayStation Store). The game contains violence, crime and adult themes – it is not a game for children, however sunny and colourful the trailers look.

Does your console have room for GTA 6?

This is the question that causes the most grief on launch day. Rockstar has not published the exact size of GTA 6; it will become clear when pre-loading starts on 12 November. Leaks put it at just under 200 GB on PS5, but that is not an official number. To be safe, plan for 200 GB plus some headroom for updates.

If you are short on space, delete games you no longer play – your saves are kept. You can move PS5 games to an external USB drive for storage, but you cannot play them from there: GTA 6 has to sit on the console’s internal SSD or on a PS5 M.2 expansion drive.

How to choose an extra SSD for PS5

Sony’s official M.2 requirements are simple, but check them before you buy:

• InterfaceM.2 NVMe SSD, PCIe Gen4 x4 (M-key). Older Gen3 drives will not work.
• Capacity250 GB to 8 TB. For GTA 6 and a couple of other big games, 1 TB is a sensible starting point.
• SpeedSony recommends a read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s.
• CoolingA heatsink is required, and with it the drive can be up to 11.25 mm thick. Many gaming SSDs come with one fitted.

Fitting the drive takes about ten minutes: remove the PS5 cover and secure the drive with a single screw. Bear in mind that SSD prices are higher in 2026 because memory chips have become more expensive.

One more number: downloading 200 GB takes about 4.5 hours on a 100 Mbit/s connection, about an hour and a half at 300 Mbit/s and half an hour at 1 Gbit/s. Those are theoretical times; in practice it takes a little longer. So pre-load on 12 November rather than leaving it for launch night.

What to get ready before 19 November

Besides storage and the download, a few things will make your first evening in Vice City more comfortable:

• HeadphonesGTA has radio stations, dialogue and city noise. A good headset gives you more than TV speakers and does not keep the household awake. The DualSense and the Xbox controller both have a 3.5 mm jack, so gaming headsets with a 3.5 mm plug work too.
• TVTurn on your TV’s Game Mode to cut the delay between pressing a button and seeing the result. If your TV supports Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), it switches on by itself.
• ControllerCharge your controller beforehand or get a charging dock. A wireless controller lasts only a few hours, and GTA evenings tend to run long.
• Account and updatesMake sure your PlayStation or Xbox account is in order and automatic downloads are on. Then the console will pull down your pre-ordered game by itself on 12 November.

Verdict

GTA 6 is the biggest game of 2026, and 19 November looks solid for now. If you already have a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, you do not need to buy anything new: pre-order (Estonian shops charge practically the same as PlayStation Store), free up about 200 GB and let the console download the game by itself on 12 November.

If you do not have a console, a standard PS5 Digital Edition is enough – the GTA 6 box only contains a code anyway. The PS5 Pro makes sense if you want more storage and plan to play other demanding games too. PC players, though, will need patience: a PC version has not even been announced.
