How to choose gaming accessories

This is the home of everything that is neither a mouse nor a keyboard yet completes a gaming setup: a floor pad under the chair, a haptic cushion that lets you feel explosions, new castors for an old chair and sim-racing upgrades. The range is compact, so here is an honest look at what is here.

• Floor pad size and shape. A round 100–120 cm pad covers the chair's travel in front of a normal desk, a square one suits a corner desk, the long Quattro pad also takes a cockpit or pedals.
• Pad material. 3 mm microfibre on a rubber base does not slide on parquet or laminate and shields the floor from castor marks; it can be vacuumed and wiped.
• Haptics. A haptic pad or cushion turns game audio into vibration — engine rumble, hits, explosions. Check the platform: the Next Level Racing HF8 works with PC, PlayStation and Xbox, the Razer Freyja gives full HD haptics only on a PC with Razer Sensa HD support.
• Chair castors. Most gaming chairs use castors with an 11 mm stem — gel castors roll quietly on parquet and do not scratch. Check your chair's stem diameter.
• Sim upgrades. A load cell makes braking realistic, a motion platform moves the whole cockpit. The latter is kit for a serious sim racer or a business customer and needs a sturdy frame.

Brands

Arozzi is a Swedish gaming-furniture brand whose Zona pads are the chair-mat standard. Next Level Racing builds sim-racing cockpits and their add-ons — the HF8 pad is the cheapest way to try haptics. Razer Freyja is the first HD-haptic cushion and the charging puck belongs to the Razer ecosystem. Thrustmaster makes wheels and pedals, and its upgrades fit its own sets. Trust offers affordable chair spares, Fellowes ergonomics and Elgato streamer tools.

Frequently asked questions

Does a floor pad really protect parquet? Yes — it takes the castor pressure and dirt; without one, hard castors leave visible marks on laminate and parquet within a year.

Does a haptic pad work with a console? The Next Level Racing HF8 does, with PC, PlayStation and Xbox. The Razer Freyja gives HD haptics on a PC via Synapse and a simpler audio-based mode over Bluetooth with a console or phone.

Will gel castors fit my chair? If the castor stem is 11 mm (the gaming-chair standard), yes. Pull out an old castor and measure the stem before buying.

What is a load-cell pedal? A load-cell brake measures foot pressure rather than pedal travel — you brake like in a real car and more consistently.

How are accessories delivered? Pads, cushions and castors go to a parcel locker or by courier in 1–2 working days; the motion platform comes by bulky-goods courier.
